82.6 Capsule A strong fibrous capsule envelops the joint and is attached firmly both to the scapula and to the upper humerus. On the scapula the attachment is around the rim of the glenoid on the humerus the capsular attachment is close to the joint surface behind, above and in front of the humeral head but inferiorly the capsule is attached to the humeral neck a centimetre or so from the edge of the articular surface. When the arm is by the side this lower part of the capsule is slack.
The capsule is reinforced at the front and below by the strong gleno-humeral ligaments and in the upper part of the joint, where the capsule is thinnest, it is overlain by the tendons of the rotator cuff muscles as they pass from the scapula to their insertions at the front of, above and behind the head of the humerus, see Figure 22.
