More recently he established with his colleague Mr. John Webb, the Spinal Disorder Unit at the Queen's Medical Centre.  This is now the largest specialised spinal unit in the Country dealing with tumour, trauma, deformity and back pain.  He is actively involved in the surgical treatment of these disorders but also runs research programmes involving biomechanical studies of the spine, rehabilitation and the chemistry of disc degeneration.

He was past president of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar  Spine, Past President of the Society for Back Pain Research and is currently President of the British Orthopaedic Spinal Society.

Inevitably he has developed an interest in the legal aspects of low back pain.
