28.1 Central foramen The segmental nature of the spine permits flexibility in several planes. A common feature of the vertebra of the axial skeleton is a ring like structure with a central foramen which accommodates the spinal cord or nerve roots (cauda equina) and the cerebrospinal fluid and spinal cord membranes.
